This website was created to showcase the Top 20 Careers that are either in need of professionals now, or will be over the next 15 years in the counties of Peterborough, Northumberland and Haliburton, and the City of Kawartha Lakes. Youth should be aware of the opportunities available to them locally. These careers were chosen based on information provided by Service Canada and consultation with local businesses/organizations. Some people view careers in the Skilled Trades as being low paying jobs for students who do not do well academically. This simply is not true. These careers pay quite well and require many different skills. Also, there are 150 apprenticeship occupations to choose from. The population in our region is aging at a significantly higher rate than the Province of Ontario. Along with this increased aging population comes a greater need for healthcare professionals, especially since older people usually need more medical attention.
